Discount types

  1. Automatic discounts
Automatic discounts apply to a customer's shopping cart as soon as their order meets the criteria.
  2. Automatic club discounts
Automatic club discounts apply to a club member's purchase as soon as their order meets the criteria. Club members are identified by their email address, so the discount applies during checkout once the customer has entered it.
  3. Coupon
Reusable codes that any customer can enter during checkout (can be used multiple times by different customers).
  4. Individual discount codes
Unique codes that can only be used once total, by one customer (they expire permanently after the first use).

Fees can also be set from this page. See Custom fees for more on Shipping Markups and Custom Fees.

Priority of applied discounts

When more than one discount could apply to an order, which one is used depends on where the order is placed. Web checkout can combine discounts; POS and Place an Order apply only one.

Web / Ecommerce

Discounts can combine:

  1. An automatic discount applies on its own as soon as the order qualifies. Customers can't add or remove it.
  2. A customer can add one discount code — a coupon code or a single-use individual code.
  3. If either the automatic discount or the code is set to stack, both apply together.
  4. If neither is set to stack, the code is used and the automatic discount is ignored.

Note: Only one discount code can be applied per order — multiple codes can't be combined.

POS and Place an Order

Only one discount applies, in this order:

  1. A discount code, if one is applied — it's used, and any automatic discount is ignored, even when either is set to stack.
  2. Otherwise, the automatic discount applies when the order qualifies.

Note: Only coupon codes from your list can be applied — single-use individual codes (XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) aren't available on POS or Place an Order. One discount code per order.

Setting up new discounts

All the options are under Products > Discounts & fees.

Discount criteria

Discounts can be triggered and shaped by these options:

  1. Audience: Choose between consumer and wholesale/trade. If you choose Wholesale, the discount applies to customers whose account you've marked as Wholesale.
  2. Order quantity
  3. Minimum dollar value
  4. Cart type: Web/Ecommerce or Point of Sale. POS includes both the iPad/iPhone app and web-based Place an Order.
  5. Delivery type
  6. Effective dates
  7. Club members only: Can be applied to specific clubs or all clubs.
  8. Customer tags: Choose select tags or All Tags. The discount applies to customers who have at least one of the specified tags.

Discount incentives

Select the type of discount to apply when the criteria are met:

  1. Product discount
    1. Choose a percent, flat dollar amount, or dollar per unit.
    2. In the advanced section, you can set whether the discount applies to specific products only. You can also exclude specific products from all discounts in the product setup.
Important: Do not discount products more than 60%, to keep the order compliant.
  2. Shipping discounts
    1. Flat rate shipping
Note: With Flat Rate Shipping, the customer is charged the flat rate even if the actual shipping fee is less.
Example: Make all 12-bottle orders ship for $22.00.
    2. Free shipping is paid for by you.
    3. Percent discount
Choose which shipping classes are covered.
Example: Order 12 bottles and save 20% off ground shipping.
    4. Specified dollar value
Example: Order 12 bottles and save $10 off Next Day Air.
  3. Waive packaging fee
If you've set a packaging fee, you can set a discount to waive it for specific orders.

Advanced features

  1. Discount is stackable: If selected, this discount will be applied to an order in addition to any other discounts that meet the criteria.
Example: If you offer club members 10% off additional purchases and $10.00 off shipping of 9 or more bottles, making them both stackable means a club member ordering 10 bottles receives 10% off their full order and $10 off shipping.
  2. Specific states: Choose exactly which states the discount applies to.
Example: You're based in CA and want to discount shipping to surrounding states, so you add WA, OR, NV, AZ.
  3. Specific ZIP codes: Limit the discount even further by choosing specific ZIP codes. Add individual ZIP codes, or cover a range by entering only partial ZIP codes.
Example: Enter "954" to apply the discount to any orders going to addresses in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake counties (all ZIP codes starting with 954).
  4. Specific product categories: Choose the product category or categories this discount applies to.
Example: Create a discount for all Clothing products, but not other merchandise products.
  5. Specific products: Choose exactly which product(s) this discount applies to.
Example: If you create a "Summer White Wine Sale," you would select all the white wines you want to discount.

Custom discount code

You can create custom discounts for customers when you're placing an order for them — but creating a custom discount removes any automatically applied discounts. To create one:

  1. In Place an Order, click Adjust Discount.
  2. Choose Custom Discount, No Discount, or any discount that's already been created.
  3. If you choose Custom Discount:
    1. Choose the discount type (percent or dollar amount), if applicable.
    2. Choose a shipping discount type, if applicable.
    3. Pick Standard Packaging Fee, Flat Fee, or Waive packaging fee.
  4. Click Save.
  5. To delete the custom discount, click Use Default Discount in the discount modal.

For more on placing an order, see Place an order.

Tracking the use of discounts

  1. Reports
To track the use of each discount code and automatic discount, go to Reports > Additional Reports and download the Discount Performance report.
  2. Discount lookup
Offers are stored and can be searched, so you can review their details.
  3. Customer receipt
When a discount is applied, the discount name(s) appear on the receipt.

Test discounts

Once you've created a discount, test it to make sure it applies the way you planned.

  1. Go to Products > Discounts & Fees and click the Test button.
  2. Set up the test order:
    • Audience (retail/consumer or wholesale)
    • Whether the example person is a club member
    • Any customer tags
    • The ZIP code you'll be shipping to, or choose Customer Will Pick Up under order destination
    • Order date (if your discount is only valid for a specific time period)
    • Cart type
    • Discount code (if you're not testing an automatic discount)
  3. Add products for the test order and click Test.
  4. The test results give you an estimated shipping cost and the overall estimated total breakdown, including discounts, packaging fees, CA CRV, and so on.
